FAQ

Membership

Contract

To begin your membership in MOR Ceramics Studio, you will be required to sign a contract stating that you have read the studio handbook and agree to the terms detailed in the separate document. Members are required to have taken a beginning course from our studio or demonstrate basic acquired knowledge of ceramic practices from another source based on a conversation with the studio manager.

Storage

As part of your membership, you will be provided with your own designated storage spaces, one for your glazes in the glaze room and one in the hallway for your tools, clay, etc. Throughout the shared spaces there are designated places to store other effects and your work in progress. Since there is limited space in the studio we require you to contribute to keeping everything you bring to and create in the studio organized.

Hafnar.haus Membership

With your studio membership, you also become a member of the hafnar.haus community, which allows you 24-hour entry to the building and access to haus benefits such as events, meeting spaces, affordable lunches, free coffee, etc. You will receive a key card or fab and an invite to join the hafnar.haus app which is where everything hafnar.haus related is communicated. This membership includes fees that are currently 5.500 kr. per month.

Materials

MOR studio does not provide clay or guaranteed access to certain studio glazes at this time. MOR studio plans to begin selling clay and a set of studio glazes sometime in 2025, but for now members are encouraged to purchase their own materials at the local clay supply store.

Studio Etiquette

MOR ceramic studio is a social and shared space which much benefits the creative process but is not necessary for some every session, thus we encourage members to be mindful of each other’s time and space in the studio. Please prioritize the space with what it is designed for. Speak kindly to and about others. During each session keep your work area clean and be mindful of how far it is spreading. If you need to borrow a tool that belongs to someone else, receive permission first then always return it to it’s original place clean and free of debris.

Shared Spaces

Main Room

The main studio room is designed and organized to work on clay pieces/projects in their “green” stage, meaning before bisque firing. There are 3 large tables and seating for handbuiding & sculpting, 3 potter’s wheels for throwing, and a canvas covered table for wedging to begin a progress on your projects. On the south wall there is a shelf with tools and equipment to loan and get started. It required to clean the tools you borrow from this shelf and return them after each session. We encourage you to purchase your own tools eventually. On the west wall there are wooden shelfs to store your projects in progress. It is recommended to apply a piece of masking tape with your name to the edge of each shelf you are using for the studio manager to monitor lingering or abandoned pieces.

Glaze Room

The Glaze room is designed and organized to work on ceramic pieces/projects after they have been bisque-fired and are ready to be applied with glaze. Each member has a spot on the shelf to store their glazes. The bottom shelf will eventually store regularly replenished studio glazes but for now is the designated place for donated glazes for all to use and experiment with at their own risk.

Sink Room

This sink room is the second bathroom down the short hallway and is the only place where clay tools equipment can be cleaned. Below the large sink is a clay trap to prevent plumbing issue in the house. Limit the amount of clay going down the sink, absolutely not clay chunks, but VERY watered down clay slurry is acceptable. Please keep this area clean and free of lingering dishware, soiled cleaning supplies, and shared studio tools.

Reclaim Room

The reclaim room is an area organized to reclaim your scrapped clay. There will be a shelf installed on the wall with plaster shelves where members may let wet clay dry out. After each use the plaster shelf needs to be wiped down clean.

Kiln Room

The Kiln room is where the studio kilns are stored and operated. The tall kiln belongs to MOR Studio and is where we fire student and member’s pieces.  All other kilns belong to other kiln room members. Do not touch or move any kiln equipment. Do not operate or unload any kiln without permission from the studio manager. Each shelf in the kiln room is labeled for where you need to place your clay project depending on which stage it is in. When your piece is ready to be bique-fired you will need to set it on the middle shelf of the blue unit. When it has been bisque fired it will be unloaded and set on the pine wooden shelf. Once you have glazed your projects you will need to place it on the next shelf up on the blue unit. After it has been high fired it will be place on the black shelf in the hallway. The studio is not a storage space for finished projects. If an unclaimed piece has been sitting on the black shelf for more than 2 months it will be donated to the studio and sold in our next adopt a piece fundraiser.

Hallway/Kitchen

In the hallway is a common space studio occupies but is also shared with other Hafnar.haus studios on the 3rd floor. This area must be kept tidy and walkway must be kept clear. Dishes should be done immediately and set to dry on the rack. There is a separate workstation here for when members want to work while there is a course in progress.

Studio Schedules

Cleaning Schedule

In addition to keeping your work area clean each time you visit the studio we depend on members to also do tidy up and do a more general clean of the studio once a week on rotation.

This cleaning includes:

-vacuuming the floors in all rooms, corners, and mats

-mopping the floors in all rooms and corners with fresh mop and cleaner

-wiping  down of tables, chairs, and sink/glaze room with a fresh rag and cleaner

-empty recycling into larger recyle bins on the 4th floor

This cleaning once a week ensure that we are all working in a healthy enviorment free of dust and harmful microbes.  At the end of each month we hold a studio coffee chat where there is an opportunity to ask questions and discuss who is on rotation in the weeks of the following month.

Class Schedule

The studio holds beginning and intermediate courses Monday and Tuesday evenings 18:00-21:30. These courses are usually held once in the fall/winter, once in the spring, and sometimes in the summer for 5 weeks. The studio also holds one day and weekend workshops featuring visiting artists up to twice a month. At the end of each month we hold a studio coffee chat where there is an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the class schedule for the following month.

Firing Schedule

The kiln firings happen on a loose schedule, depending solely on how much work there is to be fired. Currently bisque firings are loaded on Tuesdays and unloaded on Wednesday or Thursday. Glaze firings are loaded on Fridays and unloaded on Sunday or Monday. If there is not enough work to be fired for either one they will be postponed by one week. When there is a regular amount of work ready on the shelves, firings can typically happen every other week.  At the end of each month we hold a studio coffee chat where there is an opportunity to ask questions and discuss certain deadlines members have in order to plan out the schedule the best we can for the following month.
